Label QR size: 2–2.5 cm on a handheld pack
Handheld scanning is close range, so you can go smaller than a poster. You cannot go tiny. A 12 mm mark looks tidy and fails in a kitchen with warm bulbs and an older Android.
I specify a label QR size of 2–2.5 cm square on most retail packs. Two centimeters is the floor for an arm's-length scan on a clean flat panel. Two and a half is the default I put on a dieline. Dark film, shrink sleeves, metallic ink, and a center logo all need more.

Bottles, shoulders, and other curves
A camera wants a planar target. Wrap a packaging QR code around a bottle shoulder and the modules stretch. The finder patterns no longer sit in a true square. Newer phones sometimes recover. Older ones hunt and give up.
Put the code on a flat panel when you have one: the back of a carton, a side panel, a neck hanger, a flag label. Slim vials and tight shoulders are the worst. If the only real estate is a gentle curve, go up a size and proof-scan on the filled bottle.

Matte vs gloss, varnish, and foil
Store lighting is a spotlight. Gloss film throws glare across the modules. Matte stock, or a matte varnish outside the square, scans more reliably than a high-gloss pack. Keep the brand finish. Keep it off the code.

- Foil: do not foil-stamp the modules. Gold and silver decode as noise.
- Metallic ink and kraft: both eat contrast. Put a white patch behind the square.
If the varnish plate hits the square, move the varnish. If marketing wants a logo in the center, enlarge the whole code first, then drop a small mark. Do not steal the quiet zone.
Protect the quiet zone on the dieline
The quiet zone is the blank margin around the square. The spec wants at least four modules on every side. I leave about 10% of the code width as empty space. Cropping that frame into a photo, a foil rule, or a trim is a common reason a camera never locks on.

What the code should open after the box ships
The destination has to outlive the campaign. I point a packaging QR code at a product page I will still maintain when the season ends. Allergen corrections, firmware files, a recall PDF, a warranty date — none of those should wait on a new dieline.

Press proofs on production stock
An office laser on bright white is a flattering liar. Kraft, soft-touch, metallic ink, and shrink film all scan worse than copy paper. The last step before you approve a run is a proof on the real stock, at final size, on the real shape.

- Use the production stock if you can get a drawdown on the same material.
- For bottles, apply the label to a filled unit and scan the curve you will ship.

- Try store-aisle or kitchen light, not only your office.

Create it before you send dielines
