The collar tag encodes a short link, not your number. A finder scans and opens a page you can edit. Keep a phone number on the metal as backup. If you move, change carriers, or leave the dog with a sitter, you change the destination. The collar stays.

Why dynamic
A stamped phone number is wrong the day you port carriers. You edit the page. The steel stays on the collar.
I still stamp a short number next to the square. A finder with no signal can dial. The QR is the page you can update.
One destination on the tag and the flyer. You update one place when the dog is found or still missing.
You are not decorating a collar. You are leaving instructions for a stranger who just found your dog in the rain. They will not type a URL off a 12 mm disc. They will scan something large and high contrast, or they will look for digits they can dial.
I want that scan to open a page I still control. Not a tel: string I cannot edit, not last year's cell number baked into the steel. You create a QR code that encodes a short link. You stamp a phone number next to it. The finder gets both.
A lot of pet-tag shops encode your number as a tel: payload. The phone offers to call. That is tidy on day one. It is also permanent. Port the number or hand the dog to a sitter, and the tag is a lie.
A dynamic URL is the other machine. The square encodes a short path you own. The phone opens a page with your name, a photo, the current number, and a line that says what to do. Change any of that from your phone. The steel does not move.
I still put a phone number on the metal. A finder on a trail with no bars cannot load a page. They can dial. The QR is the page you update. The digits are the fallback. Do not encode the number and skip the backup.
The collar is one surface. The flyer on the pole is another. I put the same short link on both. When the dog is found, still missing, or last seen three streets over, you edit one page. Every pole stays honest.
A static flyer URL dies the first time you write FOUND and forget the copies on Oak. Same trick school flyers use when a rain date moves, and the same reason garage sale signs point at an album you can mark sold.
Print the poster square larger than the tag. People scan from a sidewalk. High contrast. A quiet white patch. Write Scan for updates under the code.
A 20 mm disc cannot hold a medication list. A page can. I put the clinic name, a microchip number, and the one drug an ER should know about. After a new prescription, I edit the page. Leave your home address off unless you want a stranger to show up there.
When I leave the dog with a sitter, I point the same tag at a short note: the sitter's name, their number, and the dates. Monday I point it back at me. The collar never comes off. Boarding is the same job. If you host pets at an Airbnb, put house-guide rules on a different square. The collar is for a lost animal, not for the Wi-Fi.

A collar disc is the hardest QR you will print. The surface is small, often curved, often metal, often wet. A code that locked on a letter-size proof will hunt on a 22 mm tag in porch light. Use the 10:1 rule from the QR code size guide for print as a floor, then go larger if you can.
I treat 18–20 mm as the floor on a disc people scan in the hand, and I still test it. Posters can sit at 3–4 cm. Do not shrink the square to fit a bone-shaped cutout if that leaves a 10 mm pattern. That pattern will not lock.

Black modules on a white patch. Skip brushed steel with no quiet fill. Leave a quiet zone. Do the tiny-tag scan test before you pay for metal. Print the PNG at the real size, tape it to a disc, and scan it with two phones. If it hunts, go up a size. Then order the tag.

A static code writes today's URL or tel: string into the pixels. When you change numbers or hand the weekend to a sitter, every printed tag is still yesterday. A dynamic code writes a short link. If a printed tag already failed, you can only repair it without a new engraving when it is dynamic and you still own the short link. For the next collar, create a QR code first, then test the size, then order metal.
