You are not decorating a collar. You are leaving instructions for a stranger who just found your dog in the rain. They will not type a URL off a 12 mm disc. They will scan something large and high contrast, or they will look for digits they can dial.

I want that scan to open a page I still control. Not a tel: string I cannot edit, not last year's cell number baked into the steel. You create a QR code that encodes a short link. You stamp a phone number next to it. The finder gets both.

A lot of pet-tag shops encode your number as a tel: payload. The phone offers to call. That is tidy on day one. It is also permanent. Port the number or hand the dog to a sitter, and the tag is a lie.

A dynamic URL is the other machine. The square encodes a short path you own. The phone opens a page with your name, a photo, the current number, and a line that says what to do. Change any of that from your phone. The steel does not move.

I still put a phone number on the metal. A finder on a trail with no bars cannot load a page. They can dial. The QR is the page you update. The digits are the fallback. Do not encode the number and skip the backup.

  • Name and photo. The finder should know they have the right animal before they call.
  • Your current number. Edit this the hour you port carriers.
  • A second contact. Partner, neighbor, or the vet desk if you travel.
  • What to do. Keep the dog, text a photo, do not chase.
  • The phone on the metal. Same number, readable without a scan.

Lost posters should open the same page

The collar is one surface. The flyer on the pole is another. I put the same short link on both. When the dog is found, still missing, or last seen three streets over, you edit one page. Every pole stays honest.

A static flyer URL dies the first time you write FOUND and forget the copies on Oak. Same trick school flyers use when a rain date moves, and the same reason garage sale signs point at an album you can mark sold.

  • Same destination as the collar. One page. Two prints.
  • Last seen. Street, time, and a new photo if you have one.
  • Found / still missing. Edit this before you pull the flyers down.

Print the poster square larger than the tag. People scan from a sidewalk. High contrast. A quiet white patch. Write Scan for updates under the code.

Vet notes belong on the page, not the steel

A 20 mm disc cannot hold a medication list. A page can. I put the clinic name, a microchip number, and the one drug an ER should know about. After a new prescription, I edit the page. Leave your home address off unless you want a stranger to show up there.

  • Clinic name and number. The ER can confirm records if they have to.
  • Microchip. Useful when the tag is gone and the scanner is out.
  • Meds that matter tonight. Insulin, seizure meds, a food allergy.

Sitters and boarding get a weekend destination

When I leave the dog with a sitter, I point the same tag at a short note: the sitter's name, their number, and the dates. Monday I point it back at me. The collar never comes off. Boarding is the same job. If you host pets at an Airbnb, put house-guide rules on a different square. The collar is for a lost animal, not for the Wi-Fi.

Tiny tags have to pass a scan test

A collar disc is the hardest QR you will print. The surface is small, often curved, often metal, often wet. A code that locked on a letter-size proof will hunt on a 22 mm tag in porch light. Use the 10:1 rule from the QR code size guide for print as a floor, then go larger if you can.

I treat 18–20 mm as the floor on a disc people scan in the hand, and I still test it. Posters can sit at 3–4 cm. Do not shrink the square to fit a bone-shaped cutout if that leaves a 10 mm pattern. That pattern will not lock.

Print the code as large as the surface allows, then test it on the real object.

Print dynamic, then edit when you move

A static code writes today's URL or tel: string into the pixels. When you change numbers or hand the weekend to a sitter, every printed tag is still yesterday. A dynamic code writes a short link. Here is how I do it before I order steel.

  1. Make the destination. Name, photo, number, a second contact, and what to do if found. Open it in a private tab.
  2. Go to the generator, pick Link, and paste that URL. The image encodes a short link, not a tel: payload.
  3. Hit Download. Confirm the email. Pay $1 if you want the PNG and the right to edit the destination later.
  4. Print one proof at the size the tag needs. Tape it to a disc. Scan it with more than one phone in real light. Then order the metal.

Mistakes that waste a tag order

  • Encoding a tel: string on a disc you will keep for years.
  • Skipping the phone number so a finder with no signal has nothing to dial.
  • A 10 mm code because it looked tidy on the bone-shaped blank.
  • A Google Doc that asks the finder to request access.
  • One square shared across two pets.
  • Skipping the tiny-tag scan test until the steel is already on the collar.
  • A different URL on the poster and the tag.

If a printed tag already failed, you can only repair it without a new engraving when it is dynamic and you still own the short link. For the next collar, create a QR code first, then test the size, then order metal.

FAQ

Is a QR pet tag better than a phone number?

A number is still useful if the finder has no data. I keep one on the metal. The QR helps when you want a photo, a second contact, vet notes, or a page you can edit after you move. Encode the short link. Stamp the number as backup.

Will a tiny collar tag scan?

Only if you use the largest high-contrast code that fits and you test it. Cheap blurry prints fail. I print a paper proof at the real size, tape it to a spare tag, and scan it in daylight and under a porch light before I order steel.

What if the finder has no signal?

They cannot open the page. That is why I keep a short phone number on the tag. The QR is the living page. The digits are the backup.

Can I change the page after the tag is engraved?

Yes, if you printed a dynamic code. The steel holds a short link you control. Change that link or edit the page. A static tel: or a baked-in URL cannot be repaired without a new tag.

Should QR codes for pet tags be static or dynamic?
